Basic Steps If You Are Involved in an Auto Accident

1.  Try to remain calm, and never leave the scene!  Hit-and-run charges can equal time in jail.

2.  If injuries may have occurred, call an ambulance and wait for it to arrive.  If victims are injured severly, do not move them.  This could result in further injuries or even death.

3.  Call the police for an accident report.  Do not move your vehicles (unless directed to by posted road signs).  Turn on your hazard lights if necessary.  If at all possible, use flares to direct traffic around the accident.

4.  Exchange ALL vital information with the other driver(s).

5.  If at all possible, get witness names and statements in writing.  Be sure to get phone numbers of the witnesses.

6.  Remember to record weather conditions, or other factors that influenced the accident.

7.  Note all Police Officer names.  If police do not show up on the scene, be sure to file a report with them as soon as possible.

8.  Do not sign any releases or documents until contacting your insurers.

9.  CONTACT YOUR INSURER.

10.  Even if you feel as if you are not injured, it is important to be examined by your doctor to detect or prevent neck or spine injuries.
